The writing prompt was
“Think of a fairy tale / nursery rhyme from your child hood that you find relates to your practice and discuss your practice through said story.”
My story was the three pigs story.
In the three little pigs discuss a material investigation into natural and man – made materials. There are also hints and underlying ideas of class and socioeconomic questionings. Problems which relate to access of materials. The first pig builds out of straw, the second of wood and the third of brick. The more natural materials are often seen as weak or fragile, I see this as a relation to nature being fragile or replaceable. The ideas can also lead to ways in which housing is being developed in Aotearoa, cheap and fast materials are being used in housing development today, I have often played with this in my work to question longevity or housing materials.
The ‘big bad wolf’ to me relates to government / colonial pressures on land.
My second story was I’m a little tea pot short and stout
I’m a little tea pot short and stout:
To me this relates to the resources which are in a shortage each and everyday, the size and scale makes me think of what land / resources are left “short and stout” meaning to me lack of or finite
Here is my handle here is my spout.
There is still an accessibly to these resources and consciousness of where and when these get ‘handed out’. In my practice I am often question my own place in Aotearoa and how I approach the materials I use.
When you hear me scream and shout:
Although relating to the ‘readiness’ this could be accumulated into protests, but in the stories case relates to ready material. It also shows when these resources are to be managed.
tip me over pour me out:
This makes me think of the distribution of materials and where they go ‘into a tea cup’ where is this distribution and how are these materials used and distributed in the wider scheme. How do we tackle these resources through methodology today. What does this look like and how are these ideas being navigated
All in all reminds me of distribution and management of resources and how we manage them when they are deemed “ready” or what that means in todays society.
