GROUNDWORK

Ground work is a sculptural show at St Peters including a variety of sculptural displays.
Seeing the works which have often been observed in a gallery setting allowed new perspectives, some works sat between buildings playing off the grass green and the walls, often metallic works could show the surroundings reflecting outwards.

Whilst wondering and navigating through this out door exhibition I did have a look at how these sculptures interacted with the outdoors, water droplet marks left over on some, bird poo and scratches, some were placed near or under big trees and acorns and other seeds had collected on top of the sculptures. Another part was installation location and how works interacted with their surroundings.

What I took away from this exhibition was locations play into a work, removing them from what I am normally faced with when viewing art and opening or reigniting that mind set. I feel it was an explorative way of engagement, there were some works which stood out for me more than others, and sometimes navigating was confusing but in the end got there.

Sculpture and how it is used may be something which I may try to reimagine further into my practice, I have been attempting to make works which fit and play into the floor space but I have tended to make them other versions of painting which remove the meaning of the object to hide the raw nature of the material used losing that meaning when painted or manipulated. Sometimes having that raw material is the best thing for the object and exhibition.
