Walters Prize 2021

Projections with a pair of drawings and a large curved seat in the middle, I almost feel as if there was a disconnect of materials from projection to having the physical work in the space. Lacey’s works were calming even with the overwhelming size, I normally feel engulfed and confronted with large works but the scale of the large projection encapsulated myself into a slow trance like state where I was slowly being taken into the work as the images scroll over top of each other, the work held faint ideas which I enjoy attempting to explore, the work was ever changing and shifting.

The next room contained seemingly musical objects formed of made materials to perform percussive sounds. On the wall were two large paintings and transparent projector paper with a ring and circles attached to the wall with honey, this resembled a diagram of a clock pointing to the times which the objects were to be played directed by the in gallery workers. Also in the room was a built structure referencing a building, with in this building played a video which you could sit down and watch on added lawn or BBQ chairs the white ones in which you would often find at a relaxed friend or family gathering outside.

Final room consisted of mainly projections onto large walls which had been added to the space, this work revolved around the Hiroshima bombing, this work was very serious and saddening to witness, photos were aiding the projections sitting small on the wall dimly lit by spot lights, the stagnant images sitting alongside imagery of stories depicted and war time video.

Over all the exhibition was an accumulation of ideas which felt quiet to approach but held a lot of substance and seriousness. Although the show wasn’t ‘fun’ or ‘flashy’ there was something to be taken away from it, how to approach subject matter and how the display can help an audience engage with these ideas being played around with. What is the best approach for viewers and how do you make an environment which helps situated the viewer especially with serious subject matter being played. How are ideas communicated to help understand the work when the work isn’t being used to its potential, the musical objects serve as sculptures and to me that may have been enough, but I had the opportunity to witness their sounds to echo the exhibitions.
Over all the exhibition showcased a variety of ideas playing out, although each project was different the approach to each work held the most importance to myself to subject matter.
