Mid year install

Llenyd Price

Long walks / discovery of thoughts.

Trees lifeless, slowly fall apart withering away into the ground, preparing the soil for the next season to sprout. Leaves carpet the walk ways bleeding into civility, residents push sidewalks clear, enjoying the cleanliness of dirty grey brick paths. I think the leaves look cute with their fading yellows getting stomped into the pavement.

Land gets broken up for new housing, earth is up turned and shifted around changing the landscape over the years. Barriers slice through the land, pavements snake alongside these rails, painted in a dark green to blend the metal into the green of the landscape, once again slicing it into sections.

Painted over multiple visits, these paintings are an accumulation of different times, places withinKirikiriroa, from new developments around Ngāruawāhia to new developments down river inTamahere.

Materials reflect both housing development and path construction along the river, ply wood holds the foundation for the large work spanning over 3 separate panels creating one singular work.

I place myself awkwardly into the painting, repeatedly exploring separate sections, I am only an idea of myself not fully fleshed out, these paths are a place which captures my thoughts.

Works:

Trees beyond gaps of the green fence (2021), concrete, wall filler, glue, house paint on found board, 520 mm x 430 mm.

Foot paths edge (2021), house paint and concrete on found board, 420 mm x 480 mm.

Fence polls (2021), house paint and wall filler on found board, 530 mm x 430 mm.

Point of view (2021), house paint and wall filler on found board, 3600 mm x 1200 mm.

A space where two walls face each other with a draw at the end, materials in the paintings are of importance to an install, concrete, wood and other building materials.
One wall hosts 3 small paintings framed in the mold of previous work recalling back to previous making formats, on top of these depictions abstracted through colour in specific the green found in natural walks which blend objects into the landscape, these colours are regulated and consistently the same shade of green becoming a place holder for the natural world tricking the brain into thinking it is natural.
The other wall consist of 3 panels 1200 x 1200 mm the size of a crate which hosts bricks and other building materials.Painted over multiple sections along side the river constantly changing over time and with seperate visits these landscapes begin to over lap and often cover each other up with layers and shifts.

I enjoy the sections and whole imagery of the long painting allowing work to work as an individual and as a whole painting. Although they are one long painting they can be excluded but also have the option of being expanded, I don’t see these works as ‘finals’ or ‘finished’ but as sections of a paintings. The colours come from old paint cans and images which I have taken along side sections of the river. It is a place to think and helps me when I need to contemplate of help myself with over thinking.
